Pinaynay na Marikit (Marikit Woven Wrap Review)

Type of carrier: Woven Wrap Size 6

Name of Wrap/: Marikit

Blend: Cotton-polyester

Wearer: 5 ft 2 inches in height 63kgs wt. Built/size: Medium to semi-Large

Wearee: 6 mos 8.3 kgs Boy and 3 year old: 11kgs (petit) Girl

Longest Carry: 1 1/2 hours (estimated)

Marikit, an adjective, an old Filipino or Tagalog word typically use to describe something or someone pretty or beautiful. A pretty name for a woven wrap. A product should hold true to it’s given name. Will this wrap meet a Pinay Nanay standards? Let us see.

I mentioned from my previous blogs and reviews, aside from safety, comfort is the number one priority for me when it comes to anything or any cloth that would touch my skin or even my babies’ skins. My first impression when I opened the package is how thin and airy Marikit was. Sadly, upon closer inspection I discovered some broken threads. It gave me the impression that it is prone to pulls and breaks so one should be very careful when using it.

Fornt Wrap Cross Carry (FWCC)

Although I’m not that crazy about the colorway, I was impressed with the color combination when taking photos. It is very visually appealing and can boost the marikit points for any plain wardrobe. I usually premade the wrap when on the go and this wrap was great as an additional accessory for me. It also looked nice when I tried on different finish when I did back – carries.

The tapered end I love, made tying a lot quicker and easier for me. As I mentioned above Marikit is rather air and thin that I find it a bit challenging at first in securing a snuggly seat for my two kids. The wrap seemed to become loose and slide a bit when doing a quick uppy. This one has a learning curve. It was challenging at first but I managed to get used to it. The color pattern of the weave is not forgiving for a lousy wrap job. It also had became a bit diggy on the shoulders when worn the longest time.

We stayed at the event for several hours and no one noticed that I breastfed the little bub while wearing him.

The density of the wrap is good for our weather for the weave is not compact. It provides good ventilation for our babies. It is just too bad that I am not a fan of cotton polyester, I find it a bit rough on the skin thus making me a bit uncomfortable. It may need a bit more breaking in.

As an exclusively breastfeeding momma, another thing I am looking for a carrier or wrap is the easiest way I can feed the little one while wearing. Now this is where we fell for Marikit, it was very easy to maneuver and adjust to our breast feeding height and position.

The aim of a testing a wrap is to get the first hand information based on the experience of a real momma wearer. I have been wearing for more than three years now but I am still am a woven wrap beginner. I am brutally honest with my review aimed not to be negative and pinpoint the cons but for the purpose of  improving the product for the babies’ safety and moms’ comfort.

Marikit Wrap is very promising. I am a fan and supporter of local weaver, producers and sellers. I choose to own a locally produced wrap even if I can buy other imported ones of the same price. Local weavers should benefit more and should be given much credit and appreciation. I would keep an eye on this one and I look forward for some more releases with different weave patterns and blends.

Pasuot* Pinaynay! (Daiesu Wrap Review)

Here is my review for Daiesu. Be patient with me, these are two reviews in one.

Type of carriers: Woven Wrap Size 6 and Ring Sling

Name of Wrap/s: Daiesu Jigsaw Mustard Woven Wrap and Jigzaw Wasabi Ring Sling

Blend: both 100% cotton

Wearer: 5 ft 2 inches in height 63kgs wt. Built/size: Medium to semi-Large

Wearee: 5 mos 8kgs Boy and 3 year old: 11kgs (petit) Girl

Longest Carry: 2 hours (estimated)

The use of baby carriers has become more of a fashion statement than a necessity for some. Personally,  fashion is just a consolation for a mom of an overly clingy, heavy weight baby. Parents like me would consider safety and comfort first over anything else when it comes to wearing our babies.

Last year,  I have learned about the Daiesu traveling wrap and the existences of wrap testers. With a little knowledge and skills about using wrap as a carrier, I did not hesitate to join Daiesu Tester Group.  I considered my self lucky to be short listed as a tester.  I learned that aside from the wrap I would also get to try Daiesu ring sling, an awesome bonus for me. My youngest was just around 2 months old when I signed up as a tester. I counted the days, weeks and months to get my hands on the testers. While waiting, my baby wearing friends holidayed their woven wraps to me. I fell head over heels in love with the art of wrapping and bought my very own woven wrap.

To continue, months had passed and the excitement of getting Daiesu became less and less. When I finally got the testers, the hype was not there anymore. To my surprise, when I opened the canvas tote bag. I  could not help myself and uttered “Oh my!” and I wanted to jump up and dance. It was so soft and floppy just like the other mommas had said! The jigsaw design is very nice and the colour is just so relaxing to look at.

Green is Wasabi RS and Yellowish Brown is Mustard Wrap

For the ring sling, it was my very first time to use one. Although one of my favourite carry with a shorty wrap is rebozo with slip knot, somewhat close to the concept of RS,  I still felt a little anxious placing and securing my 5 month old bub. He still cannot sit on his own at this stage. After a few adjustments here and there, we got the hang of it. The thickness of the wrap is just right for me, not to thick and not to thin either. It is easy to glide and adjust especially on the ring part. At first, I was afraid to mess up the pre-made seat but later on I decided to make it myself to fit the my little bub better. I was right, I positioned and secured him with a better deep sea, mission accomplished.

Then, it was time to do what I always wanted to do , place him in back carry.

image

We did it! It was our first time ever with a ring sling and first time to back carry!

Ring slings are really very easy to use. It is highly recommended for new parents and better for smaller babies.

image

Daiesu wasabi ring sling is very supportive even for heavier babies. I didn’t  feel any shoulder pain or back ache while wearing my 8 kilograms baby. It is also easy to nurse while wearing my Little One.

A walk at the park and breast feeding while wearing

My husband who is not an avid baby wearer had his experience using the ring sling. He got nervous at first but got the hang out of it after a few minutes. It was a nice experience for him but, still not a fan. I guess for him it’s more of a girl thing. Well at least he tried.

Baby wearing Dad. The design and color are gender neutral.

The Jigsaw Mustard woven wrap and the Jigsaw Wasabi has the same pattern, weave and are one hundred percent cotton. For the size 6 wrap, I love the tapered end. Despite the density of the wrap, it is very easy to knot and tie around. The thickness of the wrap is perfect and makes it more supportive even for much heavier kids. It is cushy over the shoulders making it possible to wear heavy babies longer.

image

The longest wear we have done is around 2 hours (or maybe more), the little bub slept comfortably.

The design makes a terrible wrap job look flawless. I guess the only thing I do not like about it is the light color, makes a minimal stain visible. The length can be overwhelming when on a hurry,  when wearing outside the ends always touches the ground. It was surprising that the wrap were not heavy, it seemed thick but when you carry it is not. When I worn my three year old she was so light, I felt as if the shoulder areas were padded.

Walks at the park with this two beauties! The weather was quite humid that night but did not sweat that much.

Tandem wearing for the win!

The Daiesu Jigsaw woven wraps are aesthetically appealing and comfortable to use. In choosing clothing or anything I use next to my skin, comfort is a priority me. Their Jigsaw line of wraps are simple yet chic and elegant. If I only have enough funds I would love to own one of each of Jigsaw colours. Speaking of fund, the price is very reasonable yet the quality can compete with other expensive international wraps out there.

Do check out the Daiesu website and their Facebook Page and feel free to utter those uhs and ahhs!
